Lapels is a family tailoring house, founded in 1940. It began with a simple observation. Powerful men were losing time waiting for uniforms to arrive by sea, then losing more time on alterations. Our founder did what a good tailor does. He solved the problem locally, precisely, and with pride.
That instinct, convenience, precision, and quiet excellence, became the signature of the house. What started with British naval officers grew, generation by generation, into a house trusted by modern CEOs, founders, and discerning clients who expect tailoring that holds its shape, its comfort, and its status long after trends move on.
Today Lapels operates under the M F Khan umbrella, guided by the third and fourth generations. Time honoured technique on one side. Modern design, styling, and storytelling on the other. Both held in the same hand.

Eight Decades
The Lapels chronicles
1940s — The beginning
Lapels began as a quiet tailoring practice, built on precision and an instinct for proportion. With limited means but a clear standard, each garment was approached with care, establishing a foundation rooted in craftsmanship and intent.
1950s — A growing reputation
What started by word of mouth became a trusted name among a growing clientele. The house developed a reputation for consistency: garments that held their structure, their purpose, and their presence.
1960s — Refinement
As style evolved, so did the approach. Silhouettes became sharper, details more considered. The house refined its process, balancing tradition with a more modern sense of form.
1970s — Adaptation
Amid changing cultural expressions, Lapels adapted without compromise. While trends shifted, the focus remained on proportion and structure, ensuring every piece retained its clarity.
1980s — Precision at scale
With increasing demand came the challenge of maintaining standards. The house responded with discipline, refining techniques to ensure each garment, regardless of volume, met the same level of precision.
1990s — A defined identity
By this period, Lapels had established a clear identity: structured, understated, and intentional. The aesthetic was no longer evolving rapidly, but being perfected.
2000s — Modern transition
Entering a new era, the house introduced a more contemporary lens to its tailoring. Lighter constructions and refined finishes allowed for movement without losing form.
2010s — Expanded experience
Tailoring extended beyond the atelier. With bespoke services evolving, the experience became more personal and more accessible, while maintaining discretion and attention to detail.
2020s — Continuity
Today, Lapels continues as it began: with precision, restraint, and purpose. The tools may evolve, but the philosophy remains unchanged: true tailoring is measured not by visibility, but by how it is felt.
