Alterations,
for Garments Worth Preserving
Some garments ask for more than a simple fix. Our alterations service is reserved for pieces worth preserving, whether for their craftsmanship, their sentiment or because they are simply irreplaceable.
From well worn favourites and hand me downs to garments that no longer sit as they once did, each piece is approached with care, discretion and respect for what it represents.
Our work goes well beyond surface adjustments. Much like a considered reconstruction, garments are carefully opened, rebalanced and refined, covering sleeves, collars, zips, pockets and overall proportion, before being restored to their original structure and aligned to the wearer’s present form. Every alteration is carried out by the precise hand of an experienced craftsman, guided by the standards of true bespoke tailoring, so each piece feels renewed as well as improved.
Fit and Proportion Adjustments
Subtle refinements ensure a garment sits exactly as it should, through length adjustments, hemming, sleeve work, waist refinements and tapering, all working towards a cleaner and more balanced silhouette. A suit cut five years ago for a frame that has since changed needs refinement rather than replacement, and the smallest adjustments are often what separate a suit that fits from one that looks tailored.
Complex and Structural Alterations
Where deeper correction is required, garments are carefully opened and reworked to refine the shoulder line, the seams and the overall proportion. In certain cases, jackets and suits are partially dismantled and reshaped to restore harmony between the garment and the wearer’s present form. An inherited jacket cut for an entirely different build can be reconstructed to sit as though it were made for its new owner from the start. This is reconstruction rather than repair, the kind of work few tailors will attempt and fewer still can execute properly.
Relining and Interior Renewal
Linings are replaced to restore a garment that has seen years of wear, to reflect the wearer’s current style preferences or simply to keep pace with what is in vogue. A well loved overcoat that remains structurally sound while worn thin inside can be given a new lining and a second life. What is unseen matters as much as what is seen, and a fresh interior transforms how a garment feels to wear even when the outside stays the same.
Restoration and Conservation
From vintage pieces to heirloom garments, we approach restoration thoughtfully and with a careful hand, preserving the character of the original while returning it to a state that can be worn and loved all over again. A father’s wedding suit, decades old, can be restored for his son to wear on his own wedding day. A garment’s history is preserved in the work, and the piece becomes wearable in the present.
Button, Hardware and Detail Refinishing
Buttons, zips and closures are replaced or restored to match the original character of the garment, including custom or engraved hardware where the piece calls for it. A vintage blazer with tarnished or missing buttons is refitted with pieces true to its era rather than a modern substitute.
Garment Assessment and Consultation
Before any work begins, every garment is assessed by hand, covering construction, fabric condition and structural integrity, so the right approach is determined before a single stitch is altered. A garment’s history informs the plan, and every decision is made with that history in view.
Personalisation on Existing Garments
For clients who want to add a personal signature to a piece they already own, initials, or on jackets a full name, can be discreetly embroidered into an existing garment, exactly as they would be on a new bespoke piece. A grandfather’s coat, restored and quietly personalised with its new owner’s initials, becomes a piece that belongs to two generations at once.
Alterations at Lapels Bespoke are a second act. Every garment that comes through our doors already has a story, and our craftsmen make sure it is ready to keep being told.
