Luxury Fabrics

Supreme 220 by Dormeuil, a Rare Blend of Super 220s Wool, Cashmere and Silk

Supreme 220 by Dormeuil, pronounced dor may, is woven from Super 220s merino wool with a fineness of just 12.8 microns.

Anyone commissioning a bespoke suit in this cloth should know that it is extremely rare and also very delicate. It can be compared with 24 carat gold, delicate yet pure, or with the pink diamond, whose purity stands alongside the fineness of 12.8 micron wool.

The Finest Fibre a Merino Can Produce

Super 220s represents the finest wool a Merino sheep can produce, sourced from the finest Australian Merino fleece.

Its rarity is clear in the numbers, as 600 kilograms of combed wool yields no more than one kilogram of fibre at 12.8 microns. That makes it finer than cashmere, which measures between 14 and 15 microns, and the result is an impossibly soft and fluid fabric.

A Marriage of Wool, Cashmere and Silk

Dormeuil has blended Supreme 220 with cashmere and silk, a combination that amounts to a marriage of three noble fibres.

The silk brings sheen and a silky touch, the cashmere adds suppleness, and the Super 220s wool gives the cloth its ultra luxury softness. Pure 220s merino is naturally much weaker, so the silk and cashmere also make complete sense as a way of strengthening the fibre.

The silk carries a quiet secret. It gives the cloth a gentle luminosity that catches the light naturally and subtly, creating an understated shimmer that is ideal for high profile eveningwear and formal commissions.

A Masterclass in Slow Luxury

Supreme 220 is the ultimate slow luxury challenge for any weaver.

Standard high speed industrial looms would snap such delicate threads, so the cloth must be spun and finished using traditional pressing techniques. For this reason, Dormeuil treats the collection as a masterclass in slow luxury and weaves it only in very limited batches in England.

Softness with Structure

Many Italian mills focus purely on buttery softness, which can sometimes compromise the suit itself, leaving it so soft that its clean structure is lost.

Dormeuil takes a different approach, using British heritage techniques that keep the soft feel the cloth is known for while giving it enough structure to drape well on the body. This balance is exactly what sharp, traditional tailoring requires, making Supreme 220 a remarkable choice for suiting and waistcoats alike.
